The United Nations World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO published its 2023 ranking of the top 100 innovation clusters.
Munich is the best cluster in Germany at 22nd place (24th in 2022) and the 3rd best research and innovation cluster in Europe. The Technical University of Munich and the BMW Group contribute the most patents and publications.
Munich is the 1st of 9 German clusters to be ranked among the top 100 S&T clusters. It filed 3,702 PCT applications and published 8,757 scientific articles, both per 1 million inhabitants over the last five years, making it the 22ⁿᵈ largest S&T cluster in 2023, 10ᵗʰ S&T cluster by intensity (relative to population density) in 2023.
