Curriculum vitae

Jens Foerderer holds the Professorship for Innovation and Digitalization. He is the Deputy Department Head of the Innovation & Entrepreneurship Department.

Jens Foerderer joined TUM School of Management as an Assistant Professor in August 2019. He received Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Business Informatics (Wirtschaftsinformatik) from the University of Mannheim, Business School (B.Sc. 2011, M.Sc. 2013). He graduated with a Dr. rer. pol. in business from the University of Mannheim, Business School (2017). Afterwards, he pursued his Habilitation at the University of Mannheim. Jens Foerderer was a visiting scholar at the Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland.

Jens Foerderer’s work is in the field of information systems. The goal of his work is to support managerial decision-making on value creation with digital technologies, particularly by providing economic evaluations. This includes three primary areas of work:

  • Digital Platforms: Designing, launching, and managing multi-sided platforms and ecosystems, competition within and between ecosystems, network effects and incentives for participation.
  • Data privacy and security: Data-driven business models, the consequences of privacy (or lack thereof) for firm and product outcomes, impact and countermeasures for data breaches and cyber security incidents.

Jens Foerderer’s research is based on quantitative and econometric methods, especially for causal inference. Large and novel datasets play an important role in his research work, which are obtained, for instance, from Google Android, Twitch.tv, or Stack Overflow.

His research has been published in leading scientific journals, including Management Science and Information Systems Research, and has received several awards, including the ISR Best Paper of the Year Award. Jens Foerderer is regularly serving as expert on the platform economy, for instance for acatech, Handelsblatt, or Hans-Seidel-Stiftung.
